Our Strong line of English Springer Spaniels has been developed and linebred from a firm foundation of Saighton bloodline. Outcrossing has been done on a highly selective and a very limited basis. All of the dogs we breed - regardless of whether they are from our own Strong bloodline or may be an intended outcross - are carefully selected and evaluated. In addition, they are required to complete and pass their genetic health screenings for eyes, hips, and blood.
The method we use in our selection process involves the training of promising young springers and providing them with the opportunity to gain actual hunting experience on plenty of wild game. The Texas hunting season begins in September with dove while the weather is usually hot and dry. This results in poor scenting conditions. It also provides ample opportunity to evaluate each dog's nose as they are used for retrieving duties. Our season progresses on to duck, geese - and finally, on to quail hunting, ending in March.
Besides an incredible amount of wild bird hunting experience gained at the ranch, there are frequent hunting trips to Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Montana.
Only our very best hunting dogs are selected and trained for field trial competition - and an initial test breeding. The resulting offspring are evaluated. Only those springers that meet our high standards and have proven their ability to pass on the desired traits to their progency are accepted into our breeding program.
